Goodbye Google Assistant Hello Gemini

📝 Short Intro
Gemini—Google’s next-gen AI assistant—is now rolling out to the Google TV Streamer, replacing the older Google Assistant on compatible devices. The update enables more natural voice interactions for discovering content, learning, and smart-home control.

📌 What You Need to Know

  • Gemini is being pushed to the Google TV Streamer via a software update “over the next few weeks.”

  • New capabilities include:

    • Voice-based content discovery (e.g., “I like dramas but my wife likes comedies. What’s a movie we can watch together?”)

    • Recap and context queries (e.g., “What happened at the end of ‘Outlander’ last season?”)

    • Beyond entertainment: ask Gemini to “Explain why volcanoes erupt to my third grader”, or walk through a DIY project.

  • The activation is done via the remote’s microphone button on the Google TV Streamer.

  • While this update replaces Assistant for many functions, Google says both Assistant and Gemini will coexist for a time.

📎 Why This Matters
Google is advancing conversational AI by integrating Gemini into TVs, allowing natural language interaction and transforming TVs into intelligent hubs. This move positions Google to compete in the smart-home ecosystem as an everyday assistant across devices and screens..

Wikipedia Just Told Big AI: No More Free Lunch.

📝 Short Intro
Wikipedia’s parent organisation has issued a public appeal to AI developers and companies, asking them to stop scraping Wikipedia’s content directly from its servers and instead subscribe to its paid Enterprise API, making access more sustainable and responsible.

📌 What You Need to Know

  • The Wikimedia Foundation is urging AI firms to use its opt-in, paid product (called Wikimedia Enterprise) rather than scraping the public site, to avoid over-taxing servers and support its nonprofit mission.

  • Wikimedia found that in May–June 2025, a large portion of traffic spikes to Wikipedia came from bots posing as humans attempting to scrape content at scale.

  • Human page-views on Wikipedia declined by 8% year-over-year, partly because AI tools are now providing answers directly instead of sending users to Wikipedia.

  • The foundation also emphasised that generative AI developers should provide proper attribution to Wikipedia content and human contributors when using its data.

  • Although Wikimedia hasn’t threatened legal action yet, it clearly signalled that large-scale, unauthorised content extraction is no longer acceptable without commercial licensing.

📎 Why This Matters
Large open-knowledge platforms like Wikipedia are shifting from "free and open access" to requiring licensed access for commercial-scale use, particularly by AI developers. This change could set new precedents for how knowledge bases interact with AI training data, impacting model training, licensing, and infrastructure costs.
