Find out why 100K+ engineers read The Code twice a week
Staying behind on tech trends can be a career killer.
But let’s face it, no one has hours to spare every week trying to stay updated.
That’s why over 100,000 engineers at companies like Google, Meta, and Apple read The Code twice a week.
Here’s why it works:
No fluff, just signal – Learn the most important tech news delivered in just two short emails.
Supercharge your skills – Get access to top research papers and resources that give you an edge in the industry.
See the future first – Discover what’s next before it hits the mainstream, so you can lead, not follow.
OpenAI’s Future Device Delayed

📝 Short Intro
OpenAI and famed designer Jony Ive’s secret AI device is reportedly hitting serious roadblocks in its development. The project aims to build a screenless, ambient assistant, but its realization is being challenged on multiple fronts.
📌 What You Need to Know
The device is conceived as a palm-sized, screenless gadget that interacts through audio and visual inputs.
The team has not yet settled on the device’s personality, tone, or conversational behavior (i.e. when to speak, when to stay silent).
Privacy is a major concern: the device is expected to be “always on,” which raises questions about when and how it records or listens.
Computing infrastructure is a hurdle: OpenAI reportedly lacks the scale of compute to support a device version of its AI at consumer scale.
The project could face delays: sources suggest it might slip beyond the planned late-2026 / early-2027 release window.
📎 Why This Matters
If realized, this could be a paradigm shift in how we interact with AI — moving from screens and apps toward a more ambient, always-listening companion — but the stakes are high and the technical challenges are formidable.

Sora’s New Rules Could Change AI Forever

📝 Short Intro
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has announced that Sora (its AI video tool) will shift from an “opt-out” to a more permissioned “opt-in” framework for copyrighted character usage. This gives rights holders more precise control over how (or whether) their intellectual property can appear in AI-generated clips.
📌 What You Need to Know
Previously, studios had to opt out to prevent their characters from appearing in Sora videos; Altman’s new plan reverses that to an opt in model.
Rights holders will receive more “granular control” over character generation—i.e. specify usage limits or block entirely.
OpenAI plans to introduce revenue sharing with rights holders who opt in.
The policy shift comes amid backlash after Sora videos featured copyrighted characters without permission.
Altman warned that edge cases might slip through even with controls, and that the revenue and control mechanisms will evolve.
📎 Why This Matters
This change could significantly reshape how generative video tools respect intellectual property—and whether content creators feel empowered or vulnerable in the AI era.
