Find out why 100K+ engineers read The Code twice a week
Staying behind on tech trends can be a career killer.
But let’s face it, no one has hours to spare every week trying to stay updated.
That’s why over 100,000 engineers at companies like Google, Meta, and Apple read The Code twice a week.
Here’s why it works:
No fluff, just signal – Learn the most important tech news delivered in just two short emails.
Supercharge your skills – Get access to top research papers and resources that give you an edge in the industry.
See the future first – Discover what’s next before it hits the mainstream, so you can lead, not follow.
UK Ruling Could Break App Store Lock!

📝 Short Intro
The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has officially designated both Apple and Google as firms with “Strategic Market Status” (SMS) in the U.K. for their mobile platforms — a key step that enables stronger regulatory powers over their operating systems, app stores and browser ecosystems. GOV.UK+1
📌 What You Need to Know
The designation covers Apple’s iOS ecosystem and Google’s Android ecosystem, including operating systems, app distribution, browsers and browser engines for smartphones and tablets.
The CMA found that British mobile-device owners rarely switch between Apple and Google’s platforms, and that both ecosystems hold “substantial, entrenched market power and a position of strategic significance.”
This SMS designation does not imply wrongdoing, but it allows the CMA to impose forward-looking conduct requirements and targeted interventions over a five-year period.
Possible interventions may include: changing app-store rules, enabling developers to steer users to alternative payment routes, loosening default-service controls, and improving choice around app distribution.
Both Apple and Google have expressed opposition: Apple warned of potential impacts on user privacy and feature releases, while Google called the decision “disappointing, disproportionate and unwarranted.”
📎 Why This Matters
This is a major shift in how mobile-platform regulation is unfolding: it signals that the U.K. is prepared to force structural and behavioural changes on the two companies that dominate smartphone ecosystems. For app developers, consumers, and competing platforms, this could open up new opportunities — and for Apple and Google, this could mean more constraints on how they operate their platform policies.

YouTube Adds Time Limit for Shorts!

📝 Short Intro
YouTube has introduced a new feature in its mobile app that lets users set a daily time-limit on the Shorts feed. When you hit the limit, the feed pauses and you receive a reminder — though you can still continue if you dismiss it.
📌 What You Need to Know
Users can pick a daily limit for Shorts scrolling (for example 15, 30, 60, 90 or 180 minutes) via YouTube’s settings.
Once the timer is reached, a pop-up appears that indicates “Shorts scroll paused for the day”. Scrolling can still resume if the user dismisses the prompt.
The feature rolls out starting today on mobile; it does not yet apply on desktop.
Parental controls integration (where the timer is non-dismissible) is planned “later this year.”
This new timer complements YouTube’s existing digital-well-being tools like “Take a Break” and “Bedtime Reminders”.
📎 Why This Matters
As short-form video feeds become more immersive (and potentially addictive), YouTube’s rollout of a time-limit tool signals growing attention to user wellbeing and potentially regulatory pressure. While optional and dismissible, it gives users more control — and may shape how platforms balance engagement with responsible design.
